From the original program book:
"It is an American piece in a German key. It is not a symphony, rather more a prelude and fugue, written for this student orchestra. The style is reminiscent of American symphonic orchestra and band repertoire, works by composers such as Aaron Copland and Paul Creston, music that was influenced by the "American" pieces of Stravinsky in the 40s and 50s (Symphony in C and the Symphony in Three Movements): neo-neo classicism. This Symphony in Es is what one may call neo-neo-neo-classical."
